Officially confirmed by WWE during Wrestlemania week-end, the Women’s Tournament is taking shape and more details emerged from WWE itself.

During recent WWE quarterly earnings, it was confirmed that 32 competitors from 17 different countries all around the world will compete. Some of them are already going through the background checks and tests related to WWE health standards.

The two Japanese PuroReso wrestlers and former STARDOM superstars Io Shirai and Kairi Hojo are heavily expected to be apart of it. Hojo signed a 3-year deal with WWE last month and Shirai was apart of recent tryouts at the Performance Center, mostly composed of women.

The tournament will be taped on July 13th and 14th at Full Sail University, where NXT is shot monthly. It will be shaped like the CruiserWeight Classic (CWC) Tournament, with a starting 16-match first round until the last final round.

But unlike the CWC, the Women’s tournament is not going to be a weekly episodic series. WWE is expecting to release the whole set of episodes at once as a Video on Demand program, excepted the finals. This Netflix-like system was already used for original series Holy Foley ! or Camp WWE.

The finals of the tournament will be broadcasted as a WWE Network special live event on August 29. Jim Ross is expected to be the lead announcer, but the name of his commentary partner is still unknown.

As Daniel Bryan and Nigel McGuiness helped give more focus on CWC and UK tournaments, a major name of women wrestling as the color commentator of the tournament would be impactful for this new event.
