British promotion 5 Star Wrestling announced yesterday the biggest wrestling tournament ever organised, with 30 shows in 30 weeks in 30 different arenas with 128 wrestlers that were supposed to begin on June 10th was completely rescheduled for February 2018.
The company explains in its statement is that it was “not a decision taken lightly and it is a move that will greatly improve the shows”. Refund is possible but the company will contact in the next few days people who already buy tickets to send them some for new dates (see the new schedule and conditions at the end of this article).
Big names of wrestling like Will Ospreay, El Ligero, Sha Samuels, Zack Gibson, Moose, Kenny Williams, PJ Black, John Morrison, Joe Coffey, Bram, Carlito, Johnny Mundo and Rob Van Dam were already booked for the upcoming shows.
If 5 Star Wrestling made its statement yesterday night, rumours started to spread way before when Joe Coffey and Sha Samuels posted tweets 2 days ago about time and money lost (Coffey was also set to be a part of the postponed World of Sports Wrestling Revival). Samuels noted he was “buzzing to take part in empty arena matches up and down the country”, without mentioning the tournament itself.
As company announcement was still not online, El Ligero quickly tweeted he was available for bookings on tournament dates, soon followed by Will Ospreay, Samuels, Coffey and many other wrestlers. Will Ospreay said on Twitter he was “absolutely furious” of cancellation and was waiting for apologies. Joe Coffey also posted a long and explicit message on his Facebook page about how these cancellations affect wrestlers’ lives.
If Manchester terrorist attacks were quoted as a reason for the rescheduling, the real reason could be that 5 Star Wrestling saw too big and tickets sales were not as good as expected. The company made the news a few weeks ago when they offered CM Punk $1 million to compete in the tournament. Punk never acknowledged the offer from 5 Star Wrestling, something Joe Coffey is relating as a wise choice on Twitter.
