WWE just announced NXT Women’s Champion Asuka relinquished her title due to the injury she sustained at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn III. The announcement happened during tonight’s NXT tapings at Full Sail University. Asuka has been the NXT Women’s Champion since NXT TakeOver: Dallas, on April 1st, 2016.
With 523 days of reign and an impressive streak of victories, Asuka broke Golberg’s streak of 173 continuous singles competition victories. The Empress of Tomorrow also surpassed CM Punk’s title reign of 434 days, The New Day’s World Tag Team Title reign of 483 days, and Rockin’ Robin’s second longest Women’s Championship reign of all time of 502 days.
The segment recorded yesterday night began with a video package on Asuka’s undefeated run. NXT General Manager William Regal then brought Asuka to the ring and highly praised the Champion, calling her “one of the greatest champions in WWE history”.
Regal then announced that Asuka and himself have begun negotiations with RAW General Manager Kurt Angle and SmackDown Live General Manager Daniel Bryan. Which meant she was stepping down as NXT Women’s Champion.
A bittersweet Regal was joined by the whole NXT roster and Triple H to say farewell to Asuka. The segment should air on the September 6th episode, as Triple H announced her one last time as “the undefeated, 523 day reigning Champion”.
