For the first time ever, Shawn Michaels, Mick Foley, Ron Simmons, The GodFather and even Kane sit together with Renee Young on hosting duties, all share their own behind the scenes experiences during the year that many fans call the beginning of The Attitude Era. With a selection of exclusive matches and must see moments, this is the year where fans witnessed the rise of Stone Cold Steve Austin, the birth of D-Generation, the summer of The Hart Foundation and its save to say that The Attitude Era was created with one pivotal year in WWE History.
This was 1997, a time when Boy Bands numerous as they were popular, the Budweiser Wassup Commerical was popular, Furbys ran riot, Napster was a thing and the year WWE pulled the curtain back and admitted that the only way forward was to accept that wrestling has no limitations.
“Since you’re a piece of crap, I challenge you to flush yourself down the commode!” – Stone Cold Steve Austin.
If the internet was as big in 1997 as it is now, I wonder would wrestling fans still have the same love for the wrestlers as they do now. How would they react to comments like the one above? How would they feel about wrestlers using homophobic slurs as insults? What would they say I wonder? Would they criticise about who won all the time? Who “buried” who? Why did that match make no sense? and how un-PC it was back then. When you take the rose tinted nostalgia filled glasses off, how would you feel? Food for thought.
Back to the discussion as the wrestlers all have their moments discussing the Faces of Foley, the beginnings of Triple H, the constant uncertainty of a future within the company and the plans in place to ensure there was an actual future for WWE as a promotion. It is an in-depth look behind the scenes from the viewpoint of wrestlers who were influential during that year and it is fascinating to listen to them talk about it.
As Disc one finishes the special roundtable discussion, there is a treasure trove of 19 matches spanning across Disc one & two.
