New Japan Pro Wrestling gold is coming back to England. Rainham, Essex’s own Will ‘The Aerial Assassin’ Ospreay managed to capture the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship at today’s King of Pro Wrestling event held at the prestigious Ryōgoku Sumo Hall in Sumida, Tokyo.
Competing against long time rival KUSHIDA, a man who has beaten Ospreay in all 4 of their previous singles encounters. After winning the 2016 Best of the Super Juniors and in doing so becoming the youngest person ever to do so, Ospreay would pull off the victory in 15.54 to become the first ever British and only the second UK wrestler after Prince Devitt (Finn Balor) to hold the title. Though he is not the first to hold Junior gold as back in 1984, Dynamite Kid won the WWF Junior Heavyweight Championship at a New Japan House Show. Don’t question it, it was a confusing time.
After the match, former Jr. Heavyweight Champion Hiromu Takahashi, who alongside Los Ingobernables de Japon stablemates BUSHI and SANADA defeated The Bullet Club in the form of Bad Luck Fale, Leo Tonga & Yujiro Takahashi, would come out to confront Ospreay after a recent social media-provoked feud revolving around Takahashi believing Ospreay to be a cat, only to be interrupted and attacked by Marty ‘The Villain’ Scurll, who also found victory at the show alongside fellow Bullet Clubbers Kenny Omega and Cody as they defeated CHAOS’ Baretta, Yoshi-Hashi & Jado. This would lead to Scurll challenging Ospreay for his title at NJPW Power Struggle on November 5th. Ospreay would provide further comment post-match.
