They may have been married or not, in love in real life or not, but in the ring, wrestling couples made us laugh and sometimes dream. In every possible promotion, wrestling storylines have been often linked to love. This month, the VultureHound wrestling team decided to share with you their favourite duos.

And there were plenty of choices: Macho Man and Miss Elizabeth, Triple H and Stephanie, Miz and Maryse, Edge and Lita, Edge and Vickie, Lita and Kane, Lacey and Jimmy Jacobs, Brandi and Cody, DDP and Kimberly, Matt and Reby, Daniel Bryan and AJ Lee, Cesaro and Aksana, Goldust and Marlena, Rusev and Lana, Davey Richards and Angelina Love, Eddie and Alisha Edwards, Santino Marella and Beth Phoenix, Jeff and Karen Jarrett, Sable and Marc Mero, Booker T and Sharmell… they all made history but are they what did the team choose? Let’s find out.

Erin Dick – Tommy Dreamer and Beulah McGillicuty

If Tommy Dreamer was the heart of Extreme Championship Wrestling, his romance with Beulah McGillicutty was the blood that pumped through the product in the late 90s. Beulah played a pivotal role in elevating the feud between Dreamer and Raven, providing a scandalous, yet uniquely human element to ECW’s program. After (kayfabe) meeting at a summer camp in their teen years, the three would meet again in the ring, as Beulah’s once unrequited love for Tommy would eventually be returned. Beulah’s baby announcement, though not to be true, gave fans a hero to root for, and an outcast villain to resent. As objectifying as retrospect reveals it to be, can we blame ECW for taking a simple storyline, and creating one of the most iconic moments in ECW history.

Victoria Tezangi – Edge and Lita

Growing up both Lita and Edge where a big part of why I personally was such a major fan of pro wrestling and especially the WWE. Lita was a trailblazer in the world of women’s wrestling while Edge… well, he will forever be considered as one of the best of the best. When you put the two of them together it was simply magic. Their chemistry was fantastic and they represented and brought something completely different to the table the other couples/duos on the roster did. They pushed boundaries and lived the Rated-R life better than anyone. From the iconic Matt Hardy vs. Edge Storyline that kick-started their run together to having live sex, a feud with Cena, hardcore matches, and memorable promos and segments. They represented the girl and boy your parents told you not to date but they sure did make for brilliant entertainment!

Paige Brearley – Mike and Maria Kanellis

Looking at couples in wrestling over the past ten years, Mike and Maria Kanellis are a standout. Maria and Mike have been all over the globe working their way to the WWE. Of course, Maria had already been in WWE to start her wrestling career, the Divas Era, but the time away from WWE made Maria better all-round. Intertwined in life and the wrestling scene, Mike and Maria took off in Ring of Honor, then Impact Wrestling, where they captured gold and were extremely crafty. Maria being a mouthpiece for Mike and interfering in matches when needed and Mike doing whatever he could to make sure his wife would get her way. They were conniving and evil in the best possible ways. Now in WWE they are bringing their power of love to more people, showing that love can conquer all. They’ve been together for close to a decade now and the WWE Universe gets to see on a grander scale that the hard work, the process is 100% worth it.

Steph Franchomme – Harvey Wippleman and Bertha Faye

Bertha Faye was wrestling like a man, but when Harvey Wippleman was staring at her, she was the sweetest woman. In 1995, she made her debut with WWF by quite simply breaking the nose of WWF Women’s Champion Alundra Blayze, a few minutes after she won the title from Bull Nakano. The teenager I was fell in love with the improbable duo of this little man and this larger-than-life woman. He would just make everything to please his marvel, singing his entrance “Sweet Lovin’ Arms”, even helping her win the Women’s Championship at SummerSlam 1995. “I have the man…and the shiny gold to put across my Slim-Fast waist”, noted Bertha that night. They were not really charismatic, but together they were the strongest (even if in real life, they didn’t really get along very well). The love story ended when Faye lost the belt… and 10 pounds. Their love knew no boundaries and when you’re a 15-year-old girl, you can’t help but love that.
