The word underrated is thrown around quite a bit in Pro Wrestling, some would argue too much. However, when people refer to the “Irish Lass Kicker” using that term, they’re showing just how much they appreciate what she has done for women’s wrestling in WWE and how big she’s made an impact in the lives of fans. Whether it was through her work on NXT (we try to forget that whole Riverdance gimmick they slapped onto her) all the way to her current attempt for gold and this year’s SummerSlam, Becky has shown to win over crowds and have a lot of fun in the process.
We, at SteelChair, were lucky enough to be on the call with Becky the lead up to SummerSlam. It’s fair to say that it was definitely a memorable chat not just to pick her brain, but to have a chuckle with the WWE star like you were chatting to someone and having a laugh at the same time.
For anyone that follows Becky on Instagram, you’ll know at least two things; her pun game is on point, and her love for quinoa is bordering on obsession. Her IG stories range from puns, quinoa, sometimes puns involving quinoa. With the various ways she has presented the dish, we wondered if there was a particular recipe she held close to her heart and wanted to share with the world. Fortunately for us on the call and for eager readers, we managed to get a delicious sounding response.
“So actually what I love making myself is some breakfast quinoa right?” She stated “So I make some quinoa, just regular boil it as you would, follow the instructions on the packet. Then I’ll top it with it some coconut shred, some sliced bananas, some pecans or some walnuts… Some almond butter maybe? and then, mix it some with coconut milk or some almond milk.” Just when we thought she had finished, she delivered the mic drop on this tantalising meal “Oh and then some Goji Berries. Yes! That’s the one.”
Wasn’t going to lie that the description is making me hungry even as I’m writing, laughter came down the line as I mentioned my craving for the recipe. Becky chuckled, almost as if her intention was to turn the whole call into quinoa lovers. She’s almost there.
The next thing we attempted to ask her was regarding her love of twisting the English language into an armbar for her own Punny pleasure. We asked if there was a favourite pun she had ever used. She responded by unfortunately holding back her best as it would not be appropriate for the PG conference call. The mind can only imagine what sort of wordplay and what scenario lead to this kind of secrecy, Owl bet there were some interesting answers she could have gave. Never the less we decided not to press any further as we didn’t want to start Lynching her for answers. Irish we could have gotten more, but for now, we’ll have to settle for the puns she puts out daily
For someone who’s seen the women’s division grow from NXT and finally bloom once the term “Diva” had been ditched for good, Becky Lynch has had a WWE career that is already impressive enough to have in her back catalogue. WrestleMania 32 was a monumental moment for feminism in WWE, the women’s championship had been reborn and the fans were given a fantastic match with Charlotte Flair vs Sasha Banks vs Becky Lynch. This was a moment that got me back into wrestling after a long hiatus, so we had to ask what we thought her proudest moment in the company has been. Funnily enough, WMania 32 held a special place Becky Lynch’s heart as well.
“I think it was that match at WrestleMania 32. For me when I came over from Ireland I wanted to headline WrestleMania and I wanted to change the term from Divas to women. To be able to do both, yeah we weren’t the main event, but our heads were on the side of the stadium and it felt like I had achieved what I’d set out to do.”
The feeling of accomplishment that Becky commented on felt so good to hear, to feel that she had made an impact on the representation of women in the WWE shows how much hope and compassion she has for this industry. She ended this question by leading on to an exciting thought for the future in her career. “I mean I still have to main event WrestleMania and then well tick that off the list but yeah that was my biggest moment.”
I hope to see Becky Lynch main event a venue like WrestleMania as it will show how far you can go no matter your sex. Her determination fills me with the certainty that this will be a reality soon, in some shape or form we will see her dream come true.
Finally, the conversation shifted to the response she has received from fans and her peers. Former WWE stars such as Edge, Christian, and Mick Foley have all sung her praises in the past. Becky commented on these compliments in one of the most humble responses I’ve heard in a long while.
“Its one thing to prove people wrong, that’s it’s own pressure and its own drive. but when you have people that you’ve looked up to and you love, supported you, you want to prove them right. That’s a whole different pressure. You want to make sure that everything you do makes them proud, like ‘oh That’s the reason I was behind her’. It’s such an honour to have legends like that support me, even the fans. I want them to know I never for a second take it for granted how much they support me and I appreciate them unbelievably.
Our call was brought to an end, but it was one of the more wholesome and positive calls we’ve had for the magazine. I’ll leave you now with the final words from the conversation that express how much Becky loves the support from her fans and why she’s earned a place as one of the most likeable wrestlers working today. “Sometimes I wish I could go out there and give everybody a hug but time permitting they’re telling me to get in the back. So yeah I really appreciate it.”
SummerSlam will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. UK viewers can tune in on Sky Sports Box Office, or watch on the award-winning WWE Network.
