If you didn’t catch episode one, welcome to 31 Days of Deathmatches. This is an advent calendar-style countdown to Halloween offering you a door of deliciously gory wrestling per day. Our trip to the spookiest day of the year will take us around the world and through time. This will chronicle some of the most significant deathmatches throughout the years but will mostly consist of my absolute favourite barbed wire bouts and glass shattering matches. Without further ado, let’s open the next door.
It’s back to Scotland and back to ICW for the first-ever Queen of Insanity match. We’ve already covered the King of Insanity match, where four deathmatch superstars met and raised absolute hell, now it was time for two women to do the same. Those two women were none other than Kay Lee Ray and Viper (Piper Niven). Two of the most heated rivals in the whole of ICW. Putting the pair in a match like this was only ever going to go one way, a total festival of carnage.
I believe bar the IWA Japan women’s deathmatches I had seen clips of at the time, this was one of the first women’s deathmatches I had encountered. It’s a rising market for sure but these two catapulted it to new heights with the things they were willing to do. These two have had matches around the world and all of them have been intense, now they added an extra level of violence to personal rivalry and blood feud. Fear and Loathing would be the stage of the first female deathmatch in ICW. There were all sorts of wounding weapons used in this match from barbed wire to thumbtack covered chairs to kendo sticks and carpet grippers and more. All the while shocking Billy Kirkwood and James R Kennedy on commentary. One of my favourite lines ever from a deathmatch came courtesy of Billy Kirkwood, “who the fuck has a pink cheese grater?”
Viper seemed to take the brunt of the brutality of the match as every weapon she tried to use ended up being turned on her and bloodying her. The carpet gripper ended up between her eyes and barbed wire ripped at her. She did get to dish out some punishment though as she battered Ray with chairs and dumped her in tacks. It was a horrific display of destruction as the tacks littered the ring, the barbed wire tore and the two women stood bloody and battered with Kay Lee Ray holding the championship again. It was the perfect re-gaining ground for the Hardcore Queen.
