WWE has confirmed there will be no launch this year for the next game in the WWE 2K series. During an investors call on Thursday regarding first-quarter earnings, it was asked if WWE2K was in the budget for 2020. WWE interim CFO Frank Riddick replied saying there would not be a launch of a new game this year.
This will break a twenty-year cycle from WWE’s first release of the then-WWF SmackDown video game back in 2000. The series evolved into RAW versus SmackDown before taking up the 2K title in 2013. The company’s last offering in the series WWE2K20 was panned by gamers and littered with glitches that have yet to be fully fixed. This was likely due to the last minute split between 2K and long-time developer of WWE games, Yuke’s.
Earlier this month, a former developer on WWE games released a video on YouTube claiming WWE2K21 had been cancelled and that a different type of game may be on the way. No word yet on the call regarding the release of another type of game at this time even if it was said a new WWE video game was planned to be released later this year. However, it is reported WWE are still planning to release a WWE 2K22 video game in 2021, at least as of now.
We will be sharing details on the future of the WWE 2K franchise as well as some exciting news on Monday at 7:00 a.m. PT.
