We had the chance to talk to Norbert Feuillan and Alain Mistrangélo, the “French voices” of AEW, about announcing an AEW PPV live for the first time. They are the voices of Dynamite every Tuesday nights on Toonami channel.
On being the French voices of AEW:
Alain: “Having worked a lot to get AEW broadcast to French-speaking countries since the very first episode of Dynamite, I am delighted to see that success is there and that we can offer fans, who were asked it in a sustained way on the social networks, the possibility that PPVs are also accessible in French. Fite will respond to another issue that we often hear/read about, and that is the delay between the event and the broadcast. We will be live, and I know that this is an important aspect to the French-speaking public. They will be with us at the heart of the event. The excitement will be even greater. It will be the same for us, it’s been a long time since we have been commentating together, between ROH, NJPW, and now AEW, but we had never been live. Even if most of the time we discover the shows at the same time as we comment them, to keep some spontaneity, making a “real live” will be a different experience that we are looking forward to.”
Norbert: “I am very proud to commentate AEW in French since, in the eyes of the audience, it ultimately represents an alternative to what they have been used to seeing on wrestling television for many years. It is not uncommon for us to receive messages from our viewers saying that AEW and the fact that it is available in French “brought them back to wrestling” after they had “given up” on wrestling some time ago. Working on this project has been extremely rewarding from this point of view.”
On AEW and the way the company has evolved:
Alain: “AEW wrestlers, and especially those who are behind the creation of the promotion, we have followed them for a long time through ROH and NJPW. There was no doubt for us that we had to be part of the AEW adventure and that it was going to bring a breath of fresh air in wrestling: By the quality of its wrestlers (confirmed names + young talents), the way they make decisions internally, and its relationship to others (fans etc.) Creating something from scratch, with so many expectations, is not easy, but they proved that they know how to adapt to different situations and that they are listening while following the path they have traced themselves. A path that we hope to share with them for a long time.
Besides the biggest names of AEW, what is also exciting to me is to follow the evolution and improvement of all these young and talented wrestlers, such as Sammy Guevara, Darby Allin, MJF or Jungle Boy, and follow the story they will write in order to get to the top of the wrestling business. Finally, and not least, I am a big fan of tag team wrestling, and with the division that AEW has created, I am in heaven. The Young Bucks have made a promise, and they kept their word.”
Norbert: “AEW has created itself a real identity and offered things that fans have been waiting for a long time, namely putting wrestling at the centre of weekly shows without compromising all the fun wrestling is capable of providing. It is important that we commentate their pay-per-views in French as well as they have been requested since the start of the weekly AEW Dynamite on all social networks and also from Toonami, our broadcaster in France. Being able to reply to the needs and wishes of our fans, who want more through the quality of AEW’s programs and their loyalty to our work, is really a major achievement for us.”
On Double or Nothing 2020:
Alain: “As for Double Or Nothing this year, we will obviously follow the matches for the titles with impatience, who will be our first TNT champion, next to the AEW Women’s World Champion, and AEW World Champion? But I admit that I have the intuition that the Casino Ladder match and the Stadium Stampede match, to put an end (temporary?) to the rivalry between the Inner Circle and the Elite, will be fabulous. A PPV not to be missed, whatever happens!”
Norbert: “In the current context, Double Or Nothing is an important show. AEW has been praised by critics and viewers for the great entertainment they have provided, even behind closed doors. Double Or Nothing will mark the culmination of many rivalries, many storylines that have fascinated our fans for more than two months when they needed it most.
We are all intrigued by the main event between Jon Moxley and Brodie Lee, who propelled himself at high speed to the #1 contendership for the World Championship. The Casino Ladder Match is innovation, and some already very popular young stars will be able to show their talent there, like Darby Allin and Scorpio Sky. This PPV will meet the expectations of fans who want diversity since we will also see a huge fight in a stadium of 80,000 people between 10 wrestlers from the Elite and Inner Circle who have been at war for several weeks. I think this event will be a breath of fresh air and a real reward for all our loyal aficionados.”
