Welcome back to DDT. This time I’m covering something a bit different. What happens when you give the leader of Schadenfreude the booking role and tell him to put on a no fans show? You get this. A two-match show featuring Brookes taking on one of TJPW’s heaviest hitters in Miyu Yamashita and a SUPER HARDCORE HARDCORE (yes it needs to all be in capitals) match between ALL OUT’s hardcore star Shunma Katsumata against BJW deathmatch star Drew Parker. Plus, we had English commentary from Mr. Haku and Shota. This was bound to get wacky, so let’s get into it and see what happens when Brookes books.
Chris Brookes defeated Miyu Yamashita via Praying Mantis Bomb
After a comedic introduction from Keigo Nakamura pretending to be Chris Brookes alongside Masahiro Takanashi, we got our first match. First up was Brookes vs Yamashita in what was set to be an intergender slugfest. Brookes is DDT’s current Universal champion and he’d booked himself against TJPW’s deadliest striker. And why would he want such a match? Because he wanted to kick off Yamashita’s chin. They traded chain wrestling holds with Yamashita working around Brookes’ height advantage to keep him grounded. Brookes escaped and gave a condescending head pat to Yamashita. She didn’t appreciate this and barred the arm then took him over with an arm drag. Yamashita locked in a rear-naked choke but Brookes picked her up, placed her on the top turnbuckle, and hit her with a throat thrust. The ref broke that up and Yamashita started kicking, once in the gut and once in the back (much to commentary’s approval.) She kicked him again and locked in another choke. Brookes once again picked her up and this time, dumped her over the top rope to the floor. Brookes continued by breaking her arm off the ring post and double stomping her elbow on the apron. He threw her into the Shinkiba shutter and waited for a count-out.
She got back in the ring so Brookes locked her in an armbar then snapped it off the mat. Brookes locked in a side headlock and tried to choke the life out of Yamashita. She made the ropes and started slugging Brookes with forearms. He allowed a couple then stopped her with a sole kick. He tried for the Praying Mantis bomb but Yamashita reversed it into a back-body drop. She slugged Brookes with more forearms, tanked a running elbow, and decked Brookes with a kick combination ending in a vicious PK to the back. She threw Brookes into the corner and reversed the corner senton combo into a double knee gutbuster. She tried to go top rope but Brookes stunned her up there and brought her crashing down with an Avalanche Butterfly Suplex. Brookes chased her into the corner with a running dropkick and hit the Shoop Cutter. She fought out of the Praying Mantis Bomb again, staggered Brookes with a chest kick after he pulled her hair, and sent Brookes flying out of the ring with a run-up head kick. She threw Brookes back into the ring and tried for a German but Brookes reversed with an arm breaker and ducked her skull kick into a grounded Octopus. After a long struggle in multiple holds, Yamashita made it to the ropes and powered up off of Brookes’ disrespectful head scrapes. She retaliated with a stiff chest kick but Brookes quickly chopped her back down. They continued this pattern for a couple more rounds until Yamashita started to hurt Brookes with her kicks. He caught her with an elbow and dropped her with a German. She shook it off though and dropped Brookes with a head kick. She hit another in the corner and then the pair traded knee strikes. Brookes tried again for the Praying Mantis Bomb but was met with a Skull Kick from Yamashita. Instead of going for the pin, she hit Brookes with a bridging German for 2.9. She traded slugs on the ground and hit another lethal kick but Brookes caught her off the ropes into a leaping tombstone. He hit a superkick to the head, broke out of a roll-up, and avoided another skull kick with a jumping knee. A Praying Mantis Bomb later and the match was won. Brookes had toppled Yamashita but she’d made him suffer throughout. This was a great example of how intergender wrestling is a great tool for making everyone involved look good. She even got respect from Brookes post-match.
Drew Parker defeated Shunma Katsumata via Swanton Bomb
Super Hardcore Shunma was in the building and after threatening Takanashi in the interview phase and after Parker attacking Takanashi with skewers, we got the SUPER HARDCORE HARDCORE match. Parker had been brought in as a merc to kill Katsumata for Brookes and did not want to let him down. We started with a kendo stick vs LEGO™ bat duel that saw Katsumata avoid the kendo strikes and smash Parker in the gut with the bat. He threw Parker to the outside through the empty fan seats and choked Parker out with the bat. He demanded the shutter be opened and wailed on Parker with a chair whilst it slowly creaked upwards. After choking Parker with a chair, he took the match out into the parking lot and bounced Parker off a minivan. They both climbed to the top of the minivan and slugged it out. Parker took advantage, bit Katsumata’s head, and hit a Russian Leg Sweep onto the roof of the van. They both came down and Parker climbed some nearby scaffolding to hit Katsumata with a flying crossbody. Parker brought Katsumata back inside and threw a chair at Katsumata’s back. He tried to attack Katsumata with a staple gun but Katsumata stopped him, snatched the staple gun, and shot Parker in the head with it. He fired again, stapling Parker’s bottom lip to the ring. As Parker tried to break free, Katsumata set up a chair castle on the outside. When that was finished, he ripped Parker free from the canvas and tried to throw him into the chairs. Parker put the breaks on this and whipped Katsumata through his own chair castle. Parker threw another chair at Katsumata for good measure then filled the ring with chairs. He hit a coconut crusher then went to work on Katsumata’s throat with a chair. He then murdered Katsumata with more chair shots and slammed him back-first onto one.
Parker tried for more chair shots, broke his chair, and found Katsumata’s boot in his face as he was superkicked through the frame. Katsumata then sat him down, filled his lap with chairs, and hit a running dropkick that launched Parker off the chair. Katsumata then filled the ring with Gatcha capsules and his favourite toy, LEGO™. They battled over a German Suplex and Parker found the ring hostile to him as he tried to roll away and was met by stabbing LEGO blocks. Katsumata took advantage and hit the Asta LaVista slam onto the sea of plastic for two. He slammed Parker into the blocks again and tried for a moonsault but ended up eating LEGO™ as Parker dodged. Parker wasted no time and hit a rolling senton into the plastic but only got two. Parker grabbed a ladder and the pair fought at the top of it. He overpowered Parker and hit a sunset bomb off the ladder. Parker tried to bail outside but Katsumata dived onto him and the ring hands with a Tope Con Hilo. Katsumata threw Parker back in, buried him under chairs, and hit a top rope splash through Parker and the chairs. Katsumata tried for the moonsault again but Parker cut him off and drove skewers into his head. Parker then dragged him into the Tree of Woe and dropkicked the skewers in further. Parker hit his own Tope Con Hilo and set up a table. He lay Katsumata on it and tried for a Swanton but Katsumata dodged and Parker crashed into the floor. Katsumata locked Parker in a chair STF and set up more chairs. He superkicked Parker onto them and went top rope again. He took too long though and Parker drove him off the top and onto his chair pile. Parker broke a chair over Katsumata’s head but he just laughed it off so Parker hit him in the head with a second and the smile was gone. He then hit a piledriver and finished the match with a Swanton Bomb. This was yet another awesome hardcore match from Katsumata and I was glad to see both men be respectful. Someone give Katsumata a shot in BJW’s deathmatch division, I’d love to see what he’d do with even more deadly toys. Turns out he actually will be soon…
So, there you have it, Chris Brookes’ produce show. This was great. It was set up to bring in international viewers and I’d like to hope it succeeded. I loved the two-match card, the range of matches, and just how much fun they had with it. Yamashita vs Brookes was an excellent technical bout and Katsumata vs Parker was an excellent hardcore bout. I would love to see another in the near future and hope it’s received well as it was one hell of a fun little show. Plus if you find yourself curious about this, you can subscribe to DDT’s Wrestling Universe platform for 900 yen (£6) a month and get access to this and so much more. Normally, I don’t plug things but if this gets a second Brookes show, I’ll do it. We saw DDT Big Boss Sanshiro Takagi enjoying beers with Parker and Brookes backstage so I do think another one might be in the works and I for one, cannot wait.
