Welcome back to 31 Days of Deathmatches Volume 2. The second edition of the annual deathmatch advent calendar put together by yours truly. Each day we will open another bloody door on the calendar and explore another deathmatch until we hit Halloween. We’re going to explore a ton of different companies, wrestlers, and stipulations as the days go on with a few surprises here and there. So, strap in as we prepare for another round of blood, broken glass, and barbed-wire on our road of deathmatches.

Zona 23. What can I say about this promotion that doesn’t instantly make you question my sanity? Zona 23 is a wrestling promotion that hosts deathmatches and more from a junkyard in Mexico. It is one of the ultimate cult wrestling locations and has played host to some of the best Mexican luchadors and deathmatch stars. I have picked the opening match from La Guerra Comienza, a show that saw Matthew Justice brave the COVID clustered borders to take a trip to the fabled junkyard as well as a brutal bout between Ciclope and Aeroboy that could easily make the calendar too. I chose Guerrera Negra vs Sadik Maiden for a reason though. These two women tore the absolute hell out of each other. It was a merciless mess of glass and blood that very much opened the show on a high note.

Within the opening seconds, they’d broken tubes on each other and Maiden was kneeing tubes into the back of Negra. This felt like a grudge match the ref couldn’t control as Maiden just continued to brutalise Negra. She was made a bloody mess as Maiden continued to strike at her with broken tubes and vicious strikes. When the fight travelled to the outside, the violence didn’t let up as Maiden continued her assault. Obviously, the fight didn’t remain as one-sided and it became a back and forth bout of brutality one-upmanship. The fans would throw in weapons that Maiden would often introduce to Negra. An unfortunate (or fortunate depending on his preferences) got mixed up in the violence as Maiden buried him and Negra under a pile of chairs and threw even more into it.

By the end of it, both women were bloodied up as they’d both been through a wringer of glass and skewers before Maiden won with a super tube splash. This had been one hell of a grudge bout with both women showing no consideration for the other. Maiden even continued her beatdown after the match for good measure. Sometimes when it comes to wars, the women manage to get rowdier, darker, and more dangerous than the men. This was the perfect example of it as Maiden exemplifies how to be a vicious deathmatch star. She even managed to get the whole pack of skewers to stick in Negra’s head in a horn-like bulk, instead of the split we’re used to. This is another example of a great, tone-setting opening match without relying on too many flashy spots, just good old-fashioned violence. Be sure to come back tomorrow for the next deathmatch delight.
