The self-proclaimed ‘Head of the Table’ Roman Reigns has been WWE Champion for the past 8 months and he is quickly despatching his challengers with wins over Kevin Owens, Daniel Bryan, Edge and most recent Cesaro. So who will be the one to dethrone Reigns and become the next WWE Universal Champion?
It seems Roman Reigns is on a course to face his former Shield partner Seth Rollins. Both are interacting on SmackDown in their respective feud with Cesaro. If Rollins could be Roman Reigns’ new challenger as WWE begins to perform once again in front of fans, could we see WWE pulling a major surprise and Rollins defeating Reigns when the WWE Universe returns in July?
The one man who has momentum below the main-event scene is Big E. Money in the Bank is fast approaching and Big E is the heavy favourite to win. What a special moment it would be if Big E was to cash in his briefcase and defeat Reigns. One could argue that Big E moment shouldn’t need the Money in the Bank to win the title but it could be used in the same vein as past holders of the briefcase in setting a date to challenge Reigns, maybe at Summerslam.
Looking into the future and the possibility The Big Dog keeps his championship for the remainder of 2021, maybe we need to look at who wins the Royal Rumble to defeat Reigns in the main event of Wrestlemania. A great potential storyline would be for Jey Uso to win the Royal Rumble and finally standing up to his cousin. Using the formula that worked so well for Batista going against his mentor Triple H in 2005, Jey Uso could finally get his chance and mixed in with the family divided on who should be the head of the table we have potentially a very emotional feud.
But another heavily rumoured family feud match-up for Reigns is his Hollywood cousin and former WWE Champion The Rock. Could The Great One be the one to dethrone his cousin and prove who truly is the head of the A’noi family? It would all depend on The Rock availability afterwards as he would carry the WWE Championship. The match is a Wrestlemania main event and could easily headline the next Wrestlemania or Wrestlemania in 2023 where it will be held in Hollywood, a perfect setting for a mega showdown.
Continuing to look outside of the current Smackdown roster, could we see the superstar who dethrones Reigns come from another brand in the WWE Draft that happens around autumn time? RAW superstar Drew McIntyre is running out of opponents on Monday Nights, so a move to SmackDown would see a rematch against his Survivor Series 2020 opponent.
With the WWE Draft, we could see Karrion Kross make the move to the blue brand and it would be a star-making moment for Kross to dethrone Reigns on their first meeting. Or maybe Finn Balor moving back to Friday nights and challenging Reigns. Balor has the skill set to be the main guy on SmackDown and has the support of being the man to defeat Roman Reigns and win the WWE Universal Championship.
Whoever the superstar is to defeat Roman Reigns for the Championship will have a tough task following the Head of the Table’s reign.
