With only 10 days left before Full Gear, AEW is ramping up the hype with some big matches this week. The main event saw Miro replace Jon Moxley in the semi-finals of the AEW World Championship Eliminator Tournament, who hoped to take out Orange Cassidy on the road to the final. Cody Rhodes and Andrade El Idolo went head to head, Anna Jay fought Jamie Hayter, FTR defended the AAA Tag Team Championships against Samuray Del Sol and Aerostar, and we heard from MJF and the Inner Circle. First up, Kenny Omega went up against The Dark Order’s Alan “5” Angels.

Kenny Omega vs Alan “5” Angels

Angels hit a shotgun dropkick as soon as the bell rang and stomped Omega down in the corner. Omega quickly fought back with some chops, choking Angels over the top rope. Angels landed a leg lariat, but Omega came back with a Kotaro crusher and a modified neckbreaker. Angels nearly got the win after countering a V-Trigger, then flew to the outside, nailing a Tope Suicida on Omega. Angels got rammed into the barrier and the apron, but he managed to gain some momentum and hit a moonsault to Omega on the outside. Back in the ring, he connected with a diving crossbody. He tried to land a frog splash, but Omega got his knees up.

Omega powerbombed Angels into the corner, then hit a sit-down powerbomb for a two-count. He palm struck Angels’ back, then both ben traded blows in the centre of the ring. Omega went for the One-Winged Angel. but Angels countered with a roll-up. Omega hit a V-Trigger, however, Angels kicked out. Angels ate two V-Triggers as Omega picked up the win. After the match, Omega went for the One-Winged Angel on top of a steel chair, but Adam Page came out. Angels took the chair out of Omega’s hands and Page went for the Buckshot Lariat, but Omega ducked and left the ring.

Page grabbed the AEW World Championship and said Omega had forgotten something. He said Omega better hold onto it because he’s got 10 days.

Thoughts: A solid match to kick things off, and a nice end with Page coming out, almost connecting with that Buckshot. 10 days until they meet and a two-year feud comes to a head. ***

CM Punk Addresses Eddie Kingston

CM Punk walked to the ring and grabbed the mic. The fans chanted his name, but he said it wasn’t the name he wanted to hear. He asked the fans if he could talk seriously for a moment. Punk said there are two people who aren’t here today, and one has a legitimate reason for that, and that’s the name he wants to hear. The fans started chanting for Jon Moxley. He said he could hear the fans chant his name all day because it’s important to him. He talked about having a history with Mox, and how he got a phone call last night where the situation was explained to him. He said he knew what it was like to have to be tough, but eventually, you get to a point where you have to take yourself off the hamster wheel.

Punk said he didn’t want anyone to criticise Jon Moxley because he was proud of him. He said if anyone who was watching that thought they were in a place where they need help, reach out and talk to somebody. There’s nothing wrong with asking for help, and he wished he did in his career. Punk said that brings him to the other guy who wasn’t here tonight, Eddie Kingston. He said Kingston interrupted him last week, and he doesn’t like being interrupted. Punk said if Kingston has the balls, he’ll meet him at St. Louis, waiting for an apology. Punk ended by saying the fans almost got CM Punk in the AEW World Championship Eliminator Tournament, but Eddie stopped that from happening, and he would meet him soon to see what kind of man he is.

Thoughts: A passionate promo by CM Punk about Jon Moxley, and a nice set-up for his feud with Eddie Kingston. Get well soon, Jon.

AAA Tag Team Championship Match: Samuray Del Sol & Aerostar vs FTR (Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler) W/ Tully Blanchard

Wheeler and Del Sol started things off. Del Sol transitioned from a handstand into a hurricanrana on Wheeler. Aerostar tagged in and did flips around the ring. Harwood started beating him down with some strong kicks and strikes. Aerostar hit a spinning crossbody on FTR. Del Sol and Aerostar took out FTR at ringside with some high-risk moves, with Aerostar almost landing on his head. FTR took out Aerostar in the ring. The referee was distracted, which allowed Blanchard and Harwood to beat Aerostar down in the corner. FTR threw Aerostar onto the top rope. Harwood launched Aerostar into the barricades and threw him back in the ring.

FTR continued to work in tandem, keeping Aerostar away from Del Sol. Wheeler hit a running powerslam into the turnbuckle, then FTR landed double dropkicks into his head. Harwood ran at Aerostar who moved out the way, who recovered and dived off the top turnbuckle into Harwood outside. He climbed back up the top turnbuckle and hit a diving reverse headbutt on Wheeler. Del Sol dropkicked Aerostar’s back who was on FTR’s shoulders, making him go for the pin. Del Sol and Aerostar both hit hurricanranas into a pin but only got a two-count. Harwood and Aerostar fell out of the ring. Del Sol took out Wheeler and Aerostar hit a diving splash. Del Sol ate a brainbuster outside, courtesy of Harwood. Aerostar landed a victory roll, but Wheeler reversed into a three-count to retain.

Thoughts: A decent match with plenty of high-flying from Del Sol and Aerostar. FTR were able to counter all the flips and jumps with some solid old school grappling. ***

The Inner Circle Pick Their Opponents From America’s Top Team

The Inner Circle headed to the ring. Jericho said after Sammy Guevara won last week, they got to choose who they would face at Full Gear. Dan Lambert and America’s Top Team, Scorpio Sky, and Ethan Page interrupted. Lambert said he’d like to get out of this “s***-stained city as soon as possible,” so could Jericho make the announcement and get it over with. Jericho called them an “ugly collection of dumb idiots.” Lambert talked about finding his team and making them the best in the business. Lambert went through the Inner Circle’s choices, talking about his MMA fighter’s accolades in UFC and Bellator. Hager chose Junior Dos Santos, calling him Popeye, saying they’d drop him faster than his last fight.

Santana called out Arlovski, saying they’d always had rules and regulations, but what happens when they don’t? Paige Van Zant talked about how she could take them on all by her self. Jericho said the show writes itself, and maybe she could put it on her Only Fans page. Ortiz said something in Spanish. Van Zant asked what he said, and Guevara said he called you a b****. Jericho said their final choice was Dan Lambert. Lambert went crazy, but Jericho reminded him that Lambert called himself the number one member. He said they’d kick their asses at Full Gear.

Thoughts: Magnificent segment from Inner Circle. Jericho was on fire once again. I’m actually buzzing for this match at Full Gear.

TBS Championship First Round Match: Jamie Hayter W/ Britt Baker & Rebel vs Anna Jay

Both women fought to get the upper hand in the early stages. Anna Jay whipped Hayter into the barricades then threw her back in the ring. Hayter booted her head as she stood on the apron. Hayter drove her boot into Anna Jay’s neck, then hit a suplex for a two-count. Anna Jay fought back, but Hayter threw her back to the mat. Hayter wore Anna Jay down in the corner with some kicks as Britt Baker talked trash. The ref was distracted which allowed Baker to choke Anna Jay. Anna Jay whipped Hayter into the corner and roundhouse-kicked her. She nailed a DDT and almost got the victory.

Anna locked in a headlock, but Rebel distracted the referee as Baker attacked her. Hayter hit the short-arm lariat and pinned her for the win. After the match, they assaulted Anna Jay, but Tay Conti ran down and wiped them all out. She laid into Baker, but Rebel and Hayter attacked her. Baker was about to curb stomp Conti onto the belt until Thunder Rosa ran out and everyone left the ring.

Thoughts: Not a bad match at all. Both women worked well together, but Anna Jay was always going to lose, given the fact Baker was at ringside. **½

MJF Goes In On Darby Allin

MJF came out alone tonight with Darby Allin watching from the crowd. He said when all the fresh-faced talent came into the company, everyone in the back were sweating bullets, but not them because they were pillars (referring to Darby Allin). He said, “without us, this company doesn’t work.” MJF said they were top guys and they had “it” before Dynamite existed. He asked why the fans booed him and cheered Allin. He said he would lose sleep over it, but then it hit him. He reminds the fans of everything they wished they could be, but simply can’t. MJF said Allin was one of them, and he knows he’s not good enough to be a functioning member of society. He said he’s like one of them because he’ll never fit in and never win.

MJF said Allin went from professional wrestler to stuntman. He called Allin weak mentally, and at Full Gear Allin would lose, because he’s better than him, and he knows it. MJF said there’s a reason nobody has beaten him cleanly because he’s that damn good. He said he’s so much better than him in the squared circle. Allin said he was an outcast and everything he called him. He said at Full Gear, they would have a wrestling match because he was going to let his anger out right now. Allin walked to the ring as MJF walked off. Sting cut him off and walked towards him with loads of random guys wearing MJF masks. Spears and Wardlow came out and attacked them on the ramp as Allin came to blows with MJF.

They fought into the crowd. Allin whipped MJF into the barricades, then took a huge run-up and clotheslined him back over the barricades to the side of the ring. MJF managed to escape and walk back out through the crowd as Allin stood on the turnbuckle.

Thoughts: The best segment of the night. Wow. Allin vs MJF at Full Gear has the potential to be the best match. I loved MJF’s promo about them being pillars of AEW. All in all, superb.

Andrade El Idolo W/ Jose Garcia vs Cody Rhodes W/ Arn Anderson

Cody was quick to punish Andrade after he got slapped in the face with some big strikes in the corner. They clashed on the apron and got back in the ring. Cody countered Andrade off the top turnbuckle with a dropkick. As Cody climbed to the turnbuckle, Andrade shoved him to the outside. The American Nightmare seemed to hurt his knee, so Andrade chopped it from behind and began working on it. He locked in a half crab, then landed a running knee in the corner, continuing the assault on Cody outside the ring. Andrade dropped Cody on the barrier and got back in the ring. He charged at Cody in the corner who moved out of the way, sending El Idolo outside.

Cody hit a running powerslam and began to get fired up, but Andrade hit a back elbow almost knocking him unconscious. Cody was able to get up and hit a lariat on Andrade, but he got caught with the three amigos, the final one sending Cody into the corner. Andrade hit a double knee in the corner but only got a two-count. Andrade went for the split-legged moonsault but missed. Cody hit some jabs and an elbow. Andrade locked in a Figure-Four, but Cody reversed it to put pressure on Andrade who managed to grab the bottom rope. Garcia got on the apron and Arn pulled him down, punching him to the floor.

Cody went for a Tope Suicida, but FTR appeared from under the ring to hit him with the belts. Andrade threw Cody in the ring and hit the hammerlock DDT for the win. Tully Blanchard came down to the ring, and they all started to beat down Cody. Arn got in the ring and squared up against Blanchard. The Lucha Brothers ran down to the ring and started to beat down FTR. Wheeler and Harwood managed to escape as The Lucha Brothers stood tall in the ring.

Thoughts: Andrade was dominant throughout and I’m glad he won. FTR getting involved was a nice angle, and I’m intrigued to see what AEW has in store for Cody at Full Gear. Where was PAC? Is there a tag match on the cards for Black and El Idolo to face PAC and Cody? ***½

AEW World Championship Eliminator Tournament Match: Orange Cassidy vs Miro

Bryan Danielson joined commentary before the match got underway. Cassidy spent the early part of the match running away from Miro. He went for a Tope Suicida, but Miro caught him and threw him to the ground. Miro shoved Cassidy into the ring post and the apron, then ripped off the bandages around Cassidy’s mid section. Back in the ring, Miro hit a succession of suplexes, then locked in a bear hug. He slammed Cassidy into the mat. Cassidy hit a stunner, but Miro knocked him to the mat and stomped the hell out of him. Cassidy tried to fight back, hitting a dropkick and spinning DDT. Miro rolled out of the ring and Cassidy jumped off the top turnbuckle into Miro through a table.

Back in the ring, Cassidy hit the Beach Break, but Miro kicked out at the last moment. Miro booted Cassidy and locked in Game Over to pick the win. Danielson walked to the ring after the match and they stared each other down as the show went off air.

Thoughts: Miro was unstoppable in the main event. Cassidy got some decent offence, but Miro was a machine. What a final match it’s going to be when Danielson and Miro face off. ***

What Else Went Down

Malakai Black cut a promo and said why is it men of power always think their decisions serve more than their own interests. He talked about how Tony Khan’s decision won’t affect the outcome of Cody’s match. He said when Julius Caesar was assassinated, it wasn’t just Marcus who betrayed him.

Miro appeared in a promo and said he cursed his god, he warned him, and threatened him. He was unsure whether god was rewarding him or toying with him. He said he will be champion and he will be loved, and then god would be forgiven.

The Elite were being interviewed backstage by Alex Marvez. Christian Cage walked in and Matt Jackson told him to not do anything stupid because there were three of them and one of him. Luchasaurus walked out and they all got into a brawl. The fight spilled out into the arena. Jungle Boy came out of nowhere and hit a cannonball off the ramp into all members of the Elite. Cage hit a spear on Matt Jackson on the ramp and went for Killswitch, but Nick superkicked Cage. Jungle Boy threw Matt down the ramp with a hurricanrana, then locked in the Snare Trap on Cole. Cage nailed a Con-Chair-To on Cole.

Ruby Soho and Kris Statlander were in a video package where they talked about their match together.

Hikaru Shida was presented with her trophy for 50 victories when Nyla Rose and Vickie Guerrero interrupted. Rose said she’d hit some road bumps, but now she’d hit a road block in her match with her in the TBS Tournament.

Tony Schiavone was with Dante Martin, Lio Rush, Matt Sydal, and Lee Moriarty. Sydal said congratulations to Martin and he believed in him. Sydal said he doesn’t take it personally if Martin wanted to train with Rush over him, because he has Lee Moriarty. Sydal challenged them to a tag match.

Mark Sterling and Jade Cargill were backstage. Sterling talked about Cargill getting a bye in the first round of the TBS Tournament, and they’d be watching Red Velvet vs The Bunny very closely. Cargill said she planned on making her match with the winner short and sweet.

Schiavone was in the ring with Jon Silver. He poked fun at Adam Cole for not taking his advice, and said this Friday we’re getting Johnny Hungy and he beat some budge ass.

The Bunny and Red Velvet appeared in a video package talking about their match for in the TBS Tournament.
